The opportunity

TC Energy’s Canada Gas Pipeline Engineering team has an opportunity for an experienced professional with demonstrated expertise in pipeline geotechnical engineering. Reporting to the Manager of Pipeline Engineering, as our Senior Pipeline Geotechnical Engineer, you will be responsible for providing expertise and guidance to project teams on identification and management of geohazards, pipe-soil interaction problems, and geotechnical feasibility assessments of large diameter trenchless crossings. To be successful in this role you must effectively collaborate and consult with project management, construction management, regulatory, land, and environment groups throughout projects’ development and construction phases.

What you’ll do

  • Provide technical expertise to identify and evaluate geohazards related to pipeline design and construction both at desktop and field reconnaissance levels
  • Evaluate technical studies on pipeline geohazard assessments including hydrotechnical reports
  • Work collaboratively with stress engineering to determine potential pipe-soil interaction problems and provide design and construction mitigation strategies
  • Determine geotechnical feasibility and risks associated with large diameter trenchless pipeline crossings via Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and micro-tunneling methods. Provide risk mitigations and alternatives to ensure maximum opportunity for successful and cost-effective crossing solutions
  • Provide construction support during pipeline construction activities to resolve issues related to pipe stress, buoyancy control, erosion mitigation, and construction through landslide terrain
  • Participate in field visits and helicopter fly-overs to select trenchless pipeline crossing locations and ensure geotechnical scopes of work are adequate for design and construction of trenchless crossings
  • Provide support to design and construction of facilities (meter stations, compressor stations)
  • Problem-solving through collaboration as issues arise during the planning and execution phases
  • Support regulatory applications and respond to regulatory requests
  • Provide expertise and leadership within a multidiscipline team to ensure compliance to all codes, regulations and company standards
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to pipeline staff
  • Develop and recommend alternatives and implement effective solutions using judgment, ingenuity, industry knowledge and best practices
  • Represent TC Energy in technical discussions with regulators, land owners and internal and external stakeholders
  • Identify and implement opportunities to improve process efficiencies

Minimum qualifications

  • Degree in Civil, Geological or Geotechnical Engineering. Graduate degree (Masters or PhD) in geotechnical would be considered a strong asset
  • Engineers must be registered, or eligible for registration, as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • 10 or more years of geotechnical consulting experience, with at least 5 years of experience directly related to pipeline geotechnics, geohazard assessments and trenchless crossings of onshore pipelines
  • Experience with Canadian pipeline design, operations and construction
  • An alternate combination of education and experience may be considered

Preferred qualifications

  • Proficiency with interpreting Lidar data and aerial imagery, as it relates to identification of dormant and active landslides, erosion, hydrotechnical hazards, ground subsidence and other geohazards will be considered strong assets
  • Proactive approach in identifying emerging issues for early resolution
  • Adaptability in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and challenges
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate change and help others adapt to a continuously changing environment
  • Advanced planning and organizational skills with the ability to informally lead and influence project stakeholders and maintain strong relationships within and outside the company
  • Comfortable and skilled at influencing others at various levels within an organization
  • Strong understanding of Canadian pipeline standards and regulations
