Contractually Limited Assistant Professor in Cell Biology and Animal Physiology

Position Description:

The Department of Biology at McMaster University is seeking candidates to fill a three-year contractually limited, teaching-focused faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Cellular Biology and Animal/Cell Physiology.  The preferred start date for the appointment is August 1, 2023. 

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in Biology, Life Sciences or a related discipline, a demonstrated record of teaching excellence at the undergraduate level in cellular biology and/or physiology, strong communication skills, and a commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. Evidence of scholarship or research in cell biology and animal physiology is required. 

The duties of the position will involve teaching a range of courses, which could include lecture courses in introductory and advanced cell biology, animal physiology, pharmacology, and neuroscience.  In addition, select courses may include laboratory components (e.g. animal physiology). Suitable candidates will be expected to devote themselves primarily to teaching within an academic environment, and to keep abreast of developments in the disciplines in which they teach. The appointee will normally teach six (6) courses throughout the academic year, primarily at the undergraduate level. 

The candidate will be expected to provide student mentorship and administrative service in the Department; administrative service could include participating in curriculum development in the Biology program, contributing to undergraduate recruitment events, or contributing to other service activities.  There is no expectation that the candidate will develop an independent laboratory research program, but interest in pedagogical research and student supervision is encouraged.
