Description

Postdoctoral Position in Earth and Environmental Science

The Structural Geology & Tectonics Group and the Fluvial Geomorphology at McMaster Research Group in the School of Earth, Environment & Society at McMaster University are looking for a dynamic and self-motivated individual to join our teams and fill a postdoctoral fellow position in collaboration with the APGO Education Foundation. We have previously been successful in securing funding for this work through three related Mitacs Accelerate grants and the intended project would build on this work with a new funding application. The postdoctoral position is to begin ~May 2023 on a competitive salary and benefits, and is to be for a minimum of 2 years with
possibility for extension contingent on ongoing funding. The project will be supervised by Drs. Alexander Peace and Elli Papangelakis at McMaster University and Dr. Bill Pearson at the APGO Education Foundation.

The position will involve working with our multi-disciplinary research team at McMaster on the Niagara Escarpment and environs with a particular focus on the geological evolution of the Escarpment, understanding of controls on erosion/geohazards/fluvial processes and the impact of climate change. Interests of the candidate will be considered by the supervisory team in the design of the final research project.

In addition to the research component of this position, the postdoc will be expected to engage extensively in science outreach and communication activities. Specifically, the postdoc will lead the ongoing development of ‘Geotrails’ facilitated by APGO Education Foundation. This will involve supervising small teams of undergraduate students at various field locations in southern Ontario and ensuring that they gather appropriate materials to both contribute towards ongoing research and outreach activities.

The position is ideally suited to a researcher with a keen interest in geoscience fieldwork, plus science outreach and communication. The candidate must exhibit effective written and oral communication skills and have demonstrated the ability to publish peer-reviewed papers. To be eligible for this position, the candidate must have an awarded Ph.D. in a relevant discipline.
