Research Lab Manager

Unit/Project Description:

The Mark Loeb Research Group (MLRG) located at McMaster University is an internationally recognized research group specializing in infectious diseases. The Group’s studies focus on influenza and other respiratory infections, along with COVID-19.  The MLRG is currently accepting applications for the role of Research Lab Manager to support multiple ongoing, prospective projects.  This role is on-site.

Job Summary:

The Research Lab Manager is responsible for developing, designing and overseeing experiments for research and contract projects and provides technical research support within a laboratory environment.

Purpose and Key Functions:

  • Adapt and modify existing scientific techniques for research experiments.
  • Review scientific journals to obtain new research methods and techniques.
  • Design research experiments that address hypotheses that are provided by the Principle Investigator.
  • Complete and submit ethics approval forms and material transfer agreements.
  • Capture experimental data and analyzes results.
  • Use mathematical manipulations and statistics to analyze and interpret research data.
  • Write standard operating procedures, sections of research articles and papers for publication.
  • Draft study design and implementation budgets. Prepare time and resource estimates required for the completion of research studies.
  • Calculate doses of allergen and intervention compounds.
  • Coordinate and deliver training presentations to internal and external client groups.
  • Delivers presentations at international conferences and seminars.
  • Perform basic wet lab procedures in the preparation of solutions which includes pipetting.
  • Administer injections and perform surgeries on animals. Intubate and collect blood samples from animals.
  • Prepare tissue samples for review.
  • Conduct standardized experiments.
  • Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Assist in organizing attendance for conferences by arranging travel and accommodation and completing registrations.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies inventory.

 

Requirements:

Master's degree in Biology or related field.

Requires 2 years of relevant experience.

Assets:

  • Ability to conduct database, literature, and web searches.
  • Previous work with infectious disease research

Additional Information:

The successful candidate will have:

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in CL1 and CL2 laboratory settings, as well as good laboratory practice requirements.
  • Experience in DNA/RNA extraction/quantitation, ELISA, RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and other immune/virology assays.
  • The ability to function in a highly detail-oriented and organized manner.
  • The ability to work independently, as well as part of the team.
  • The ability to liaise with various suppliers of equipment, software, service contract and reagents to negotiate pricing and delivery.
  • The ability to troubleshoot technical problems with equipment and perform minor repairs as necessary; liaise with service providers to schedule preventative maintenance and equipment repairs.
  • The ability to make recommendations on the acquisition of new equipment and replacement of aging infrastructure.
  • The ability to create/assist in the creation of lab manuals for various research projects.
  • Knowledge of MS  Office (advanced experience in Excel, in particular); ability to learn multiple database programs.
  • Ability to work with and supervise students
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities
