Post-Doctoral Fellow Position in Biomechanics and Technology

McMaster University, beginning September 2023 or January 2024

Applicants are invited for a post-doctoral fellow position under the supervision of Dr. Dylan Kobsar in the Department of Kinesiology, Faculty of Science at McMaster University. The post-doctoral fellow position is available for individuals interested in investigating the biomechanics of musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoarthritis, and the technologies that can make them accessible to clinicians, surgeons, and health professionals. Specifically, the successful applicant will work within an interdisciplinary team to study the impact of biomechanics on surgical decision making for total joint arthroplasty. This research will utilize state-of-the-art markerless motion capture and wearable technology within a translational research and clinical environment. The successful applicant will be expected to support the research and clinical staff on a variety of biomechanical topics surrounding this project, while also having the independence to develop additional projects in line with our lab’s objectives. The successful applicant will work directly under Dr. Kobsar, in collaboration with our clinical and industry partners.

Requirements: The successful candidate must have a PhD degree within the last five years (not including parental leaves, etc.) in Kinesiology, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of biomechanics and working with human subjects, alone with the following desired attributes:

  • Experience with optical motion capture and wearable technology
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., MATLAB or Python)
  • Experience in developing and/or implementing machine learning algorithms (e.g., deep learning, transfer learning, reinforcement learning, optimization, etc.)
  • Ability to mentor teams of junior students and collaborate with clinicians
  • Good communication and project management skills
  • A strong publication track record

More information:

Starting salary will be set according to McMaster University guidelines and the experience of the successful candidate.

This position is included within the CUPE Local 3906, Unit 3, representing Post-Doctoral fellows.

The initial appointment will be made for 1 year, with opportunity for extension. 

This appointment is considered a full-time appointment, working 35 hours per week.
