Seed Orchard Labourer
$22.12 - $24.90 hourly

Up to 25 seasonal auxiliary positions are available at our Skimikin Seed Orchard site in Tappen for 30 day seasonal hires. No relocation allowance or accommodations will be provided.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development is the Province’s agency responsible for land and resource management in B.C., which includes the protection of the Province’s archaeological and heritage resources. Operating on a provincial land base of over 94 million hectares, the Ministry ensures the sustainable management of forest, wildlife, water and other land based resources; works with Indigenous and rural communities to strengthen and diversity their economies; and, supports activities that provide environmental, economic, cultural and social benefits.

The mission of the Forest Improvement and Research Management Branch is to enhance the value, resilience and conservation of BC’s forest genetic resources. The Seed Production section manages five provincial seed orchards which currently produce 55% of the improved tree seed supply and are operated on a cost recovery basis.

The Seed Orchard Labourer position is responsible for picking cones and carrying out a variety of general labour activities relating to the care and maintenance of seed orchards. This role maintains grounds, orchards, holding areas, and plantations; including but not limited to mowing and weeding, applying fertilizers, attaching tree labels/tags, field layout, rock picking, and assisting other staff. The Seed Orchard Labourer plants trees, rootstock, and grafted ramets into orchards, holding beds, and pots and collects/picks orchard cones and pollen with the use of orchard ladders and lifts. Qualifications for this role include:
• Prefer manual labour or outdoor working experience.
• Prefer experience working with plants; i.e. tree planter, gardener, landscaper, orchard worker, and cone picking, or equivalent training and experience.
• Physically fit and able to lift supplies (i.e. bags of fertilizer, cones buckets, etc.) and operate equipment (i.e. orchard lifts, pruners, weed eaters, mowers, etc.) on an on-going basis.
• Able to work outdoors in all types of weather, including winter cold weather, and with potential allergens such as pollen, grass, insects, chemical pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers; as well as ability to work at heights using lifts and ladders.
• Basic knowledge of safe work practices and a good safety attitude.
• Ability to follow instructions/requirements, complete tasks on time and work independently and in a team.
• Demonstrated ability to read labels and instructions and communicate clearly.
