Description
OCAD University (OCAD U)—Canada’s largest and oldest art and design post-secondary institution—invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean, Faculty of Art. In order to rectify the underrepresentation of racialized and Indigenous administrators, and in accordance with the University’s special program under the Ontario Human Rights Code, priority in hiring will be given to qualified racialized and Indigenous persons who self-identify as such in the application process.

OCAD U is undergoing a dramatic evolution that is significantly strengthening its position as a global leader in art and design practice, research, and education. The Faculty of Art has played a major role in this evolution. It continues to educate artists and cultural practitioners who are shaping and redefining the meaning of contemporary art practice. It is known for activating a deep knowledge of material processes in the production of images, objects, narratives and events through studio and hands-on practical experience, and, is supporting new knowledge through research and diverse modes of representation, including those that engage technological and social innovations. It is an exciting time to join the OCAD U community as the University is at a key stage in its institutional transformation, with its Creative City Campus project underway and the implementation of its Academic Plan with six guiding principles: decolonization, diversity and equity, sustainability, valuing faculty, interdisciplinarity and health and wellness.

Reporting to the Vice-President, Academic & Provost, the Dean of Art is responsible for the educational and research leadership, development, and supervision of the Faculty and its integration into the University’s Academic and Strategic Plans. Working collaboratively and in close consultation with the Dean of the Faculty of Design, the Dean of Liberal Arts & Sciences/School of Interdisciplinary Studies, the Dean of Graduate Studies, and the Vice-President, Academic and Provost, the Dean of Art promotes effective management of the University’s academic programs, research, outreach, supports its educational goals, and enriches University life.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned leader with significant teaching experience, as well as an advanced or terminal degree in art. To be successful in the role, the Dean must be acutely aware of current and/or emerging practices in art, education, curation, research, and material production, and must have the vision to move the Faculty forward in an innovative and sustainable manner. The new Dean must also have strong budget skills, exceptional communication and problem-solving skills, a transparent, collaborative and consultative leadership style, and a proven record of administrative experience gained within a complex cultural organization or post-secondary institution. The Dean will possess significant administrative experience to contribute to OCAD U’s efforts to decolonize curriculum and reimagine pedagogy. The Dean will also demonstrate capacity to implement organizational change strategies designed to redress systemic, structural and historical disadvantage in employment as well as educational policy and practice. The Dean, Faculty of Art must be eligible for appointment with tenure at the senior ranks.

Located on a twelve-building campus, OCAD University offers a vibrant and stimulating work environment for over 600 faculty and academic staff, more than 4225 undergraduate students, and over 270 graduate students. Committed to excellence and contemporary approaches to education, research, and creation, OCAD University offers 18 undergraduate programs; seven graduate programs; has new programs in development including a studio-based creative writing program, an experimental animation program, and a practice-based PhD program; and, is currently developing joint degrees, curriculum and articulation agreements within the Ontario college and university sectors.
