General Description The mission of Media Production Services (MPS) is to embrace creativity, drive innovation and achieve excellence in print and digital media for the benefit of our customers, partners and McMaster University. We are seeking candidates for an experienced and passionate WordPress Accessibility Specialist to join our talented web development team. We are looking for someone with expertise with both back-end and front-end development, including custom WordPress themes, plugins, new features and functionality. Working directly with clients, the WordPress Accessibility Specialist plays a critical role in providing end-user AODA training and guidance on website design, architecture and functionality. Job Summary: | Responsible for both back-end and front-end development, including creating custom WordPress themes, plugins, new features and functionality with a particular focus on web development and developing delivery strategies based on the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). This position requires a combination of programming skills (such as PHP, HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript) and a thorough understanding of Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), PCI compliance, website performance and security. | Purpose and Key Functions: | - Lead, design and build the website front-end utilizing front-end technologies and frameworks such as HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, and jQuery.
- Coordinate and support the implementation of web accessibility efforts within the University, as per the emerging institutional Web Strategy and accompanying AODA web accessibility roadmap.
- Develop and implement WordPress and digital content accessibility training for content providers. Train staff to make changes and maintain websites.
- Convert comprehensive layout and wireframes into working HTML pages and HTML emails.
- Build user interfaces for websites and/or web applications
- Design and develop effective responsive design websites.
- Support the complex PHP back-end development utilizing various computing and scripting languages.
- Develop documentation, training, and guidelines for diverse groups within the organization (academic and administrative audiences) for WordPress education and to provide structures for maintaining website accessibility as per the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Currently at a WCAG 2.0 Level AA level, and preparing to move to the WCAG 2.1 AA level.
- Implement a communication strategy that informs clients of new WordPress features, the AODA requirements, the tools, and resources available to support compliance and aspirational web accessibility goals, timelines around compliance and reporting.
- Provide advice to campus community regarding accessible website structure, guidelines, and development.
- Develop recommendations for web accessibility monitoring and or reporting applications and software.
- Implement code versioning and deployment tools.
- Create, design and generate WordPress custom themes, features and plugins.
- Build and reference advanced custom field (ACF) groups into WordPress features and functionality
- Meet with clients to discuss and provide guidance on website design, website architecture, functions.
- Interpret complex functionality requirements and develop into functional code.
- Facilitate technical WordPress training for clients and develop technical supporting and training materials.
- Ensure accessibility compliance (AODA) as part of the audit process and establish improvements in regards to web accessibility.
- Ensure PCI compliance, WordPress security, and website performance following best practices for auditing and implementing improvements
- Troubleshoot content issues and technical bugs.
- Inspect HTML and debug issues using tools such as Firebug, and Chrome Web Inspector.
- Ensure high-performance and manage all technical aspects of the WordPress.
- Remain current with frequent changes to software and multi-media mediums, with especial focus on accessibility implications, as well as knowledgeable of international web accessibility standards.

- Occasionally provides orientation and shows procedures to others.
- May assign work to external consultants and temporary staff.
| Requirements: | - 3 year Community College diploma in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field.
- Requires 5 years of relevant experience.
