The Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning (CTL) at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a specialization in Mathematics in Teacher Education. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2020 or shortly thereafter.

We are searching for a motivated researcher to join a dynamic team of outstanding teacher educators in the Master of Teaching (MT) program, one of the top initial teacher preparation programs in Canada. Candidates must demonstrate instructional expertise in mathematics teacher education at the intermediate and secondary levels, scholarly expertise in mathematics teacher education research, strong familiarity with research and practice perspectives on initial teacher education, and the ability to work in diverse contexts and with diverse student populations. Candidates must also demonstrate expertise appropriate to the position through some combination of the following: (a) prior leadership experience in a Canadian teacher education program; (b) leadership experience in mathematics education at the classroom, school, district, and provincial levels; (c) demonstrated knowledge of equity issues within mathematics education and education in general; (d) strong understanding of teaching and learning in the Ontario context; (e) experience conducting both quantitative and qualitative research; and (f) a demonstrated commitment to mathematics teacher education and the continuing professional development of teachers.

Applicants must have earned a doctoral degree in Mathematics Education or a closely related discipline by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter. Candidates are expected to have an emerging record of research excellence in mathematics education as demonstrated by high-quality publications in top disciplinary journals and/or a research pipeline that meets high international standards, strong endorsements from referees of high standing, presentations at significant conferences, the submitted research statement, and an emerging program of research of sufficient quality to develop into an independent and innovative externally funded research program.

The successful candidate will have university teaching experience in the context of mathematics teacher education, experience within intermediate and/or secondary school classrooms, and a demonstrated capacity to understand and connect with the diverse experiences of students in school and university settings. Evidence of excellence in teaching is required, as demonstrated through the teaching dossier, teaching accomplishments, teaching evaluations, sample course syllabi, strong letters of reference, and other materials submitted as part of the application. The successful candidate must also demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills and be certified or eligible for certification as a teacher by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).

Responsibilities of the position include teaching courses in the Master of Teaching and the Curriculum and Pedagogy programs, providing leadership and innovative programming for Master of Teaching students, supervising graduate students, and maintaining an ongoing independent and innovative program of research in mathematics education. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our scholarly community through research, teaching and service. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
