Ministry of Attorney General: Vancouver On behalf of the Attorney General, lawyers in the Legal Services Branch discharge the duties and functions assigned to the Attorney General under the Attorney General Act. Legal Counsel 3 in the Litigation Group represent the Attorney General, the Province and other government associated persons and entities in all levels of court and before administrative tribunals in diverse areas of civil litigation including constitutional law, class actions, administrative law, personal injury law, law enforcement and corrections law, and environment and land law. They have an in-depth understanding of, among other enactments, the applicable rules of court, the Crown Proceeding Act, Attorney General Act, Judicial Review Procedure Act, in additional to the Constitution Act, 1867 and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Legal Counsel 3 are expected to negotiate and recommend settlements where appropriate and provide litigation-related advice in every area of government practice. As a Legal Counsel 3, your broad range of professional skills will enable you to give advice in areas of law outside the dimensions of your regularly assigned legal responsibilities. You will be dealing with matters that can involve large sums of public funds and/or be of importance to the public interest. You will be expected to advise on current developments in the law which may affect areas of concern to government. Assisting with developing and recommending alternatives and initiating changes in these areas of the law will also be required in this role. Qualifications for this role include: • Must be a member in good standing, or immediately eligible to become a member, of the Law Society of British Columbia; • Twelve or more years of call to the bar in a Canadian jurisdiction; • Experience in the conduct of civil litigation at the Supreme Court of British Columbia and/or the British Columbia Court of Appeal; AND • Significant experience with the law of evidence. | |
