As part of the Collaborative Care Team, the Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor assists in the delivery of services to individuals and family members affected by substance use and mental health issues. As a community advocate and front-line worker, the Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor provides supportive care, brief counselling and education to clients and family members and makes referrals for additional counselling and treatment as necessary.

JOB DUTIES
• In conjunction with the Collaborative Care Team, provides supportive services for clients who are at risk for or seriously affected by substance use and/or mental health issues, and for their families
• Participates in ongoing team work including the development and implementation of plans for care
• Provides drug and alcohol counselling and support to individuals, families and groups in the community
• Coordinates community care and/or referrals to outside treatment facilities
• Assists clients in the development of life skills and healthy lifestyles through group facilitation

CredentialsCertification in Addictions and/or mental health counselling highly recommended
Education Requirements• Degree in social work and registration with the College of Social Work recommended
• Diploma in social work / mental health and addictions or other related health field with experience will be considered
• Certification in Addictions and/or mental health counselling highly recommended
Experience• Minimum of two years’ recent work experience in the mental health and/or addictions field
• Experience in counselling techniques and group facilitation recommended
• Experience working with Aboriginal people in a community based health care setting an asset
• Awareness of and sensitivity to Aboriginal history, cultures and traditions
