ABOUT THE INSTITUTE ON ETHICS & POLICY FOR INNOVATION

The Institute on Ethics & Policy for Innovation (IEPI), based in the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities at McMaster University, is focused on identifying and addressing ethical challenges, ethics-related risk, and policy gaps that have the potential to undermine the impact of life-saving technologies and interventions in Global Health and Development. The Institute delivers its ethics research and consultation services worldwide to support researchers, funders, sponsors, policymakers, and other stakeholders in global health navigate through ethical issues that impact work across the innovation lifecycle. IEPI is currently supported by a major grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and is responsible for delivering an ethics program of research and consultation service that supports the Foundation’s Global Health division.

THE OPPORTUNITY

IEPI is seeking an Assistant Director to be a part of the executive team and lead the operational development and execution of IEPI's research and consulting programs. Primary responsibilities will include working with the Director to evolve IEPI's existing strategic framework to further advance the achievement of IEPI’s mission and vision. The Assistant Director will execute on the strategic priorities through refining existing programs and orienting the Institute for future success through expanding the range of initiatives and programs offered. This will require building effective partnerships, aligning operational resources and mobilizing a team of professional staff.

The Assistant Director will play a primary role in monitoring the execution of the research programs key strategic outputs and making instinctive adjustments to ensure alignment with the Institute`s goals and objectives. This will include reviewing the day-to-day progress of research projects, and realigning plans and resources to ensure key project deliverables are met. IEPI is at the forefront of evolving global health priorities, which requires a candidate who can adapt to changing priorities and lead as a change champion.

The successful candidate must have extensive knowledge of ethics and global health policy and practice issues to advise on key trends in the ethics and global health landscape, and to develop new and refine existing research projects. There will be an opportunity for the candidate to make scholarly contributions by writing and contributing to research papers.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have a PhD in ethics, public health or global health, and have a proven track record and success in:

  • A senior leadership and/or program management role

  • Engaging and collaborating with senior academic and health system leaders

  • Managing financial and human resources

  • Ethics and/or global health research

This position requires some national and international travel, and therefore a valid passport is required.
