The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is a national museum dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights. It is the first national museum in Canada to be built outside the National Capital Region. Located in the heart of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the CMHR rises from the Prairie earth at The Forks, which has been a meeting place for over six thousand years.

Purpose of Position

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centered around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Exhibition Technician will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive, equitable, innovative and focused on inspiring action.

Reporting to the Director, Exhibitions with day-to-day oversight from the Exhibition Specialist, the Exhibition Technician is responsible for the fabrication, production, installation, maintenance and care of all built Museum exhibitions.

The Exhibition Technician specializes in the materials and methods needed to translate the vision of content creators and designers into impactful built exhibitions. The incumbent will be a strong and thoughtful communicator, critical thinker and innovator, and will bring a collaborative approach to their role.

Key Responsibilities
- Contributes to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models anti-racist and accountable behaviors.
- Fabricates and installs core and temporary/travelling exhibitions (preparation of gallery space, fabrication of exhibitory and mounts, installation of exhibitions).
- Remediates built exhibitory as required.
- Applies creative solutions and problem solving to fabrication of designed exhibition elements.
- Reviews proposed case designs, mount designs, AV integration scenarios, environmental sustainability, electro-mechanical requirements and gallery flow, and make recommendations as required.
- In collaboration with other team members, assesses, reviews and participates in artifact-handling and preservation measures including determining mount requirements, installation strategies, packing and unpacking of artifact shipments.
- Works with the Conservation Technician/Assistant Registrar to monitor, analyze, trouble-shoot and regulate climate/environmental controls.
- Ensures best practices and Occupational Health and Safety, including maintaining a clean workshop environment and tool maintenance.
- In conjunction with the Exhibition Specialist, oversees work conducted by contract staff as well as Facilities and IT (accompanying contract workers when handling and transporting artifacts, instructing contract workers on task at hand and expectations, ensuring contract workers are informed of CMHR standards in construction and behavior).
- Maintains a working list of resources and contacts for supplies and tools.
- Remains abreast of best standards of exhibition installation and fabrication.
- Works closely with staff, service providers, partners and external contractors and artists.

Required qualifications
- Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity, inclusion and dignity for all.
- A degree or certificate in Exhibition Preparation/Museum Studies or equivalent training.
- Minimum 5 years experience in exhibition fabrication, installation and maintenance.
- Knowledge of best museum practices in artifact handling.
- Exhibition fabrication skills such a mount-making, brazing/welding metals, molding plastics, sewing/wrapping/adhering cloths, fine carpentry, framing, furniture building, acrylic fabrication, painting and finishing techniques or electronics.
- Ability to read and modify shop drawings.
- Ability to work from non-blueprint renderings and to produce precision pieces of furniture, cases, artifact mounts and collections barriers, etc.
- Competency working with climate/environmental controls.
- Proven ability in scenography (panoramas, window-type displays).
- Ability to assess and manage workshop and other OHS risks; knowledge of PPE usage.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite and capacity to learn additional software.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong analytical, research and development and problem-solving skills.
- Strong time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure and prioritize.

Desired qualifications

- Completion of a museum exhibition installation course from the Canadian Conservation Institute or other accredited program.
- Ability to communicate in both official languages, oral and written.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, SketchUp and other design software.
- Experience in the design, fabrication and maintenance of electromechanical elements.
- Certification in forklift, scissor lift, aerial boom lift and fall arrest training.
