Job Summary


The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) is looking for dedicated individuals to fill the position of Linguist within the Foreign Language Services department in CSIS HQ.  Candidates must possess a high level of initiative, motivation and discretion.

The position will be of interest to individuals who are able to translate from one or more foreign languages identified below into English, and who are able to work effectively as part of a team.
Under the direction of a supervisor, you will be responsible to:

  • Translate from one or more foreign languages into English.
  • Summarize foreign language materials
  • Coordinate translation projects involving teams of translators and revisers on major projects.
  • Provide technical and linguistic assistance to freelance translators.
  • Review/revise translations submitted by freelance translators for accuracy and quality.
  • Provide interpreting services as required.
  • Provide consultative services to operations on contents and context of foreign language materials.
  • Assist with the training and development of freelance translators.
  • Conduct terminological research and assist in the preparation of foreign language glossaries for use by other translators and analysts.
  • Assist with rating foreign language tests.
  • Assist with Language Quality Assurance reviews.

CSIS is looking for individuals with the following language proficiency:

  • Mandarin
  • Persian with Dari

Education


  • Undergraduate degree in Translation or in foreign language studies or in a related field and two years of relevant experience*.

The educational program must be from an accredited learning institution recognized in Canada.
If you completed a program outside of Canada you will be required to obtain proof of a Canadian equivalency at your expense through a recognized credential assessment service.
Note: Any higher level of education could be recognized as experience.

Experience

*Relevant experience in translating from a foreign language into English.

Candidates must also possess:

  • Experience translating** and / or summarizing from a foreign language into English.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Experience in the use of computer applications and translation tools.
  • Master, at a specialized level, one of the following languages:
  •  
    • Mandarin
    • Persian with Dari

The following assets qualifications may be used by managers when selecting their right fit candidate(s) from the pool. Therefore, in the cover letter, applicants must also explain how they meet applicable asset experience criteria:

  • Experience in interpreting from a foreign language into English and vice-versa.
  • An in-depth knowledge of the associated culture and experience in advising clients regarding cross-cultural communication.
  • Certification from a professional association recognized by the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC).
  • Experience in revising translated material.
  • Experience transcribing and translating audio material.
  • Experience using Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tools.

**Written tests will be administered to evaluate candidates' language proficiency in a foreign language as well as in English.
