As a Hardware Engineer at United Rentals, you are responsible for designing and building a ruggedized IoT platform including sensors and communication gateway for monitoring and controlling environmental conditions on industrial and residential construction sites. Hardware requires embedded C code for wireless sensors and a Python application running on Linux.

Additional duties include the following:

  • Lead design and development of new sensors and revisions of existing sensors

  • Coordinate with the development and operations team to define requirements for new features

  • Perform schematic capture and PCB layout using Altium Designer

  • Perform circuit board testing, analysis and troubleshooting

  • Leverage embedded software capabilities to help interface and collaborate with software and test engineers

  • Document product requirements, specifications, and designer test plans

  • Review the existing architecture for sustainability and scalability as requirements evolve

  • Identify, research, and resolve issues raised by customers

  • Troubleshoot system failures and discrepancies

  • Execute certification test plans (e.g. EMC)

  • Other duties assigned as needed

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree Electrical or Mechanical Engineering; P.Eng membership in good standing with APEGGA

  • 10+ years of experience designing custom sensors

  • Schematic capture and PCB layout using Altium Designer

  • Circuit board testing, analysis and troubleshooting

  • Oscilloscopes, logic analyzers & DMMs

  • SMD soldering

  • Experience developing and implementing a quality assurance program for inspecting and repairing equipment

  • RF, troubleshooting radiated and conducted emissions, antenna design and FCC/ICES certification process

  • Safety testing and certifications to UL/CSA 62358-1 and UL/CSA 61010-1

  • Designing and troubleshooting xBee RF radio modules

  • Embedded software capabilities to help interface and collaborate with software and test engineers

  • Analytically oriented with strong documentation skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Self-motivated and willing to work in a small, fast-paced team environment
