Bruce Power is currently seeking candidates for our Control Room Shift Supervisor program.

The Opportunity

Selected candidates will join the Control Room Shift Supervisor in Training (CRSSIT) program, initially starting as a Shift Advisor Technical (SAT), you take on a variety of duties to acclimatize to the plant, its daily operations and shift work. Once you have gained the general plant knowledge and process knowledge and your supervisor supports your progression, you will go on to the CRSSIT program. This is an extensive three-year training program where you will learn all of the technical aspects to run the plant during both normal and abnormal conditions. Once successfully completing the training program you will spend a period of time on shift co-piloting with a licensed Control Room Shift Supervisor. Upon successful completion of the co-piloting term, you then receive a CNSC license and move into the Control Room Shift Supervisor role. This entire training process typically last 5 years in duration.

The primary responsibility of the Control Room Shift Supervisor is to manage the conduct of operations of the Main Control Room staff at Bruce A or Bruce B generating stations in compliance with the operating licence and approved policies and procedures. Accountabilities for the Control Room Shift Supervisor include reactor units, Unit 0 streamed Operators and Fuel Handling staff in the Main Control Room. Candidates are expected to demonstrate progress to remain on the program.

Specific Accountabilities:

Upon notification of a significant system, environmental, radiological, or equipment deficiency, ensure that the defective system or equipment has been converted to a safe state in accordance with approved operating procedures.
Ensure that the conditions of the Operating Policies and Principles are rigorously observed.
Ensure all work (operating and outage units) is conducted in a conservative fashion, such that personnel, nuclear, public and environmental safety are the over-riding priority.
Review work done on the shift and give a detailed shift turnover to the relieving Shift Supervisor. Provide or obtain appropriate authorizations and approvals for work in accordance with the plan and, as required, by the station, Operating Policies and Principles (OP&Ps), and other procedures.
Work with Shift Manager and shift supervision to ensure crew performance meets all Operations expectations and standards, identify and implement recovery plans where required.
Other duties as required.

CredentialsCapability as required to obtain authorization of a Control Room Shift Supervisor at assigned facility.
Education RequirementsMust have a degree in Engineering or Science from a recognized university or an acceptable alternative (noted below).
Acceptable alternatives are:

A current or expired certification as an Authorized Nuclear Operator, Unit 0 Control Room Operator, Control Room Shift Supervisor, or Plant Shift Supervisor at a Canadian nuclear power plant; OR
A current or expired certificate of qualification as stationary engineer second class or operating engineer second class obtained in Canada; OR
A two-year technician or technologist diploma from a recognized institution in a discipline relevant to power engineering, with three years’ experience in that discipline; OR
Three-year technologist diploma from a recognized institution in a discipline relevant to power engineering, with two years’ experience in that discipline; OR
Academic qualifications that meet the requirements for registration as a professional engineer in Canada.
Experience8-10 years of experience in a leadership role in an industrial environment
Ability to work in a technical environment under time constraints
Experience managing in a unionized setting is an asset
