| Join the dynamic Recycle BC team as our Field Services Specialist, First Nations! You will be working closely with First Nation communities across British Columbia to develop and improve collection of recyclable materials. The Field Services Specialist, First Nations is a shared resource between Recycle BC and the First Nations Recycling Initiative (FNRI) program which involves ten product stewardship agencies in BC. As part of the Recycle BC team, the Field Services Specialist, First Nations will work to establish new collection services for waste packaging and paper product (PPP) as well as assist with maintaining existing collection programs in First Nations communities. Key responsibilities include working alongside Recycle BC to collaborate with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) and their consultants on new collection service opportunities in under-serviced areas of BC. In facilitating the shared collection of recyclable material through the FNRI program, the Field Services Specialist, First Nations will work with the ten participating agencies to deliver activities such as collection round-up events, promotion and education opportunities, community recycling awareness and community outreach. Key Responsibilities: * Visit and meet with First Nation communities who participate in the Recycle BC program or wish to join. * Visit and meet with First Nation communities who recycle other items collected through participating stewardship agencies, or wish to. * Attend and potentially present at conferences and events. * Visit and meet with local governments to discuss possible recycling opportunities with nearby First Nations communities. * Liaise with First Nations at the level appropriate for the community: Chief, Band Council, Waste Management Coordinator, etc., and with ISC and their consultants. * Liaise with the participating stewardship agencies under the guidance of Recycle BC to develop and improve collection of stewarded material, and present at meetings with all of the agencies twice per year. * Provide appropriate information to each First Nation community to allow for informed decisions on collection of stewarded material, and develop information resources as needed. * Work with existing partnered First Nation collectors to ensure contractual requirements are understood and carried out in daily operations. * Build relationships with each First Nation community and provide in-field training on established policies and practices for the collection and logistics for each of the participating stewardship agencies as agreed for this initiative. * Collaborate with other staff to gather information, conduct research and analysis, to test ideas and conclusions, and to develop plans and strategies necessary to achieve the objectives of the program. * Work with First Nations communities and field staff to arrange logistics for collection events, including consolidation, removal and coordination with transporters for pick up of stockpiled stewarded products from First Nations communities for recycling. * Provide community training, promotion & education, and participation in local events & initiatives (i.e., classroom visits, community day interaction, etc.) to promote the collection of stewarded material. * Act as Stewardship Ambassador providing outreach on behalf of each of the participating stewardship agencies to First Nations communities and their members. | Credentials | Valid driver’s license and frequent access to a vehicle is required. |
| Education Requirements | Education related to indigenous studies, environmental studies, science or engineering subjects, or related discipline, or related experience. |
| Experience | At least five (5) years’ experience in operational optimization, waste management, program field management or related roles. Direct experience in stewardship, recycling or related field is beneficial but not necessary. Strong interpersonal, relationship-building, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. Solid leadership skills and ability to work independently. Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Ability to prepare clear and concise administrative and technical reports. Adaptable to provide community training to all ages and levels of knowledge of the programs. |
| Languages | English Required. Any First Nations Language Of British Columbia Would Be An Asset. |
| Work Settings | Flexible work schedule requiring periods of extended working hours to facilitate field visits across the province and resolve collection issues. Willingness to work in the community with physical labour and in all weather conditions. Requires extensive travel within the province to meet with First Nations communities. |
