Job Summary


The National Health and Safety Advisor is responsible for assessing all matters relevant to the health and safety of Service employees under Part II of the Canada Labour Code, they:

  • Plan, develop and implement a Health and Safety Program to reduce the risk of incident and the severity of employee injuries, property damage, occupational illness and exposure to environment hazards in accordance to federal legislations.
  • Develop and coordinate the national policies, programs and standards relating to the Health and Safety Program and recommend appropriate changes.
  • Act as a resource person by providing policy advice, interpretation and guidance to managers and/or their representatives, employees and HQ/Regional Health and Safety Committees.
  • Plan and develop internal educational campaigns and related activities/communiques; implement a Health and Safety training program.
  • Coordinate and monitor the processing of Employee Accident/Incident/Threat to Safety Reports.
  • Prepare, write and maintain an accident/incident statistical system and analyse the data for trends, frequency and severity rates.
  • Assess and recommend corrective action on deficiencies by conducting safety surveys, inspection and/or special environmental studies.
  • Review the minutes of all health and safety committees to ensure recommendations and procedures are properly implemented and followed.
  • Establish networks by liaising with different government departments and agencies to foster the sharing best practices and to anticipate and analyse trends.

Education


  • Undergraduate degree and two (2) years of relevant experience; or
  • College diploma and four (4) years of relevant experience.

The educational program must be from an accredited learning institution recognized in Canada.

If you completed a program outside of Canada you will be required to obtain proof of a Canadian equivalency at your expense through a recognized credential assessment service.

Note: Any higher level of education could be recognized as experience.


Experience


Relevant experience is defined as:

  • Significant experience providing advice to managers, employees and/or Health and Safety committees on the application of the Canada Labour Code, Part II, rules and/or policies related to occupational health and safety in the workplace; and
  • Experience leading or coordinating projects involving multiple stakeholders, such as managers, employees, employee/union representatives or members of Occupational Health and Safety.

Significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience that would normally be acquired by a person in a position where the performance of these duties constitute their main functions for the specified period of time.

Assets:

  • Experience managing the accident/incident reporting process
  • Experience developing and delivering training related to health and safety in the workplace
  • Experience developing educational material, communiques or newsletters related to health and safety in the workplace.
  • Canadian safety certifications, such as: Certified Health and Safety Consultant, Certified Occupational Health Nurse, Canadian Registered Safety Professional, Registered Occupational Hygienist or Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist.
