The Opportunity
The School of Early Childhood Studies (ECS) in the Faculty of Community Servicesat Ryerson Universityin the city of Toronto on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and Wendat invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor commencing January 1, 2020, subject to final budgetary approval. The area of specialization is Indigenous studies with a focus on children, youth, families, communities and related topics.

Ryerson’s Truth and Reconciliation Community Consultation Report (see below) has recommended immediate action be taken to increase the number of Indigenous scholars at the university. In this hiring process, the School of ECS invites applicants in the spirit of this recommendation.

Shortly after appointment, the successful candidate will commence a process resulting in a cross-appointment to the School of Child and Youth Care, the terms of which are described more fully below.

The School of Early Childhood Studies consists of 17 tenure-stream faculty members, and is the oldest school of its kind in Canada. Early Childhood Studies encompasses multiple perspectives in the study of childhood. Our undergraduate program focuses on young children’s learning and development from birth to eight years of age, in the context of families and communities, in areas of education, research and policy. Our Master of Arts program focuses on equity, diversity and inclusion in early childhood studies. Approximately 1000 full- and part-time students are enrolled in our programs. We have an on-campus laboratory school and a multi-service model family resource program.

The School of Child and Youth Care consists of 10 tenure-stream faculty members and approximately 800 undergraduate and graduate students. The school focuses on teaching emerging child and youth care practitioners and emerging scholars in the field of child and youth care. The curriculum is practice-oriented and focused on relational practice in child and youth care settings such as group homes, foster care, the community, hospitals and schools, with a very strong focus on the experiences of Black youth, Indigenous youth, young people identifying as 2SLGBTQ+ and young people with disabilities in systems such as child welfare, child and youth mental health, education, health care and community-based services. Pedagogically, the curriculum draws on professional practice experience in the role of child and youth care practitioner on the part of instructors and faculty members. The faculty in CYC prides itself on the excellence of its research and on the quality of its teaching.

Both of our schools are interested in candidates who will contribute to our existing research and teaching strengths by bringing innovative and diverse perspectives and experiences to the work.
