PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Reporting to the Manager, Commodity Tax, the successful candidate’s primary duties will include:

  • Accurately preparing and filing prescribed commodity tax returns and refund claims in a timely manner (including GST/HST, QST, PST, fuel tax, and carbon tax);
  • Analyzing tax reports, tax account balances, and related documents to ensure the accurate accounting of the federal and provincial commodity tax liabilities and refunds to minimize penalty and interest charges;
  • Assisting in the completion of government commodity tax audits and refund reviews; and
  • Providing general commodity tax advice to the business units.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Reconciling and analyzing monthly tax account balances and details to confirm their validity and investigating variances;
  • Accurately preparing and filing all assigned commodity tax returns prior to the legislated deadlines, as well as reviewing and reconciling the related notices of assessment;
  • Reviewing specific transactions for commodity tax compliance and minimization and making any appropriate adjustments;
  • Monitoring and improving the commodity tax return process and identifying commodity tax opportunities and exposures;
  • Responding to routine commodity tax queries from business units;
  • Assisting in developing and executing commodity tax compliance and recovery initiatives; and
  • Assisting the Manager, Commodity Tax to assess the effects of commodity tax legislation changes, including maintaining and validating SAP tax logic.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, or information technology, or equivalent experience;
  • Keen interest in learning commodity tax and building a longterm career in commodity tax;
  • Ability to read and understand legislation and governmental administrative policies;
  • Knowledge of railway business would be an asset;
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail;
  • Able to prioritize workload under tight and firm deadlines; and
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • To be considered for the Specialist position, the following additional items are required:

  • Accounting designation or equivalent experience;
  • At least four years of commodity tax experience or SAP experience;
  • Demonstrated independent worker;
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative; and
  • Experience in effectively communicating with larger or important groups.
