 PURPOSE OF POSITION:

 

As the Solution Architect, the successful candidate will share significant accountability with Enterprise Architecture and IS Delivery teams to ensure the success of IS initiatives. The Solution Architect will be responsible to design modern and innovative project solutions that meet business requirements while being aligned with IS Roadmap and approved standards and best practices.

 

CP decides to modernize legacy systems in parallel with building new innovative solutions. The Solution Architect will be leveraging modern IT Architecture discipline to deal with the complex aspects of business, information, application, and technical architecture enriched with modern cloud and AI based solutions.

 

You will be working with highly skilled enterprise architecture team, project managers, and delivery teams in road mapping and blueprinting sessions; working collaboratively with other members of the IS team, process owners and subject matter experts; facilitating business process analysis and design sessions to enable and support IS initiatives.

 

This position reports to the Senior Director, Enterprise Architecture and will have primary responsibilities for designing solution architectures to enable and support IS initiatives.

 

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

 

  • Lead the assessment, design and development of the overall project solution architecture and make sure all architecture components (data, application, user interfaces, technical, integration, security, network, infrastructure, etc.) are well integrated and aligned to meet business requirements.
  • Work with delivery teams, business stakeholders, and Enterprise Architecture team to determine the best approach to link business strategy, objectives and constraints into viable, robust and cost-effective implementation plan and agile solutions that meet current requirements and that they can evolve to support future requirements without costly rework and disruptions;
  • Understand solution implications for assigned projects and recommend appropriate solutions or exceptions that balance business risk with enterprise architecture requirements;
  • Create and maintain project architecture artifacts (system and security architecture, non-functional requirements) in compliance with the solution architecture process and methodology;
  • Enable CP systems to consume predictions and become smarter, modernize apps to be simpler, more accurate and faster to deploy and manage.
  • Provide architecture guidance and directions to delivery teams as needed to ensure alignment between business goals and the overall project solution architecture as well as alignment with IS Roadmap and EA Standards and best practices.
  • Conduct regular architecture project reviews and monitor progress towards a defined and approved solution architecture, identify and address necessary changes, gaps and/or opportunities in the desired target architecture causing solution delivery issues.
  • Research, promote, and develop solution architecture best practices, guidelines, procedures and repeatable and scalable frameworks.
  • Embraces continues improvements with solution architecture practice.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Engineering or related field and/or appropriate experience
  • 5-15+ years of progressive experience in solution architecture or related roles.
  • Practical and broad knowledge in designing integrated systems that include ERP/SAP systems, other COTS systems, and custom build solutions.
  • Practical architecture knowledge in several of the following disciplines: business architecture, information, applications, domains (security, infrastructure, integration, etc.), technical architecture.
  • Experience and/or formal training in architectural design and common industry frameworks (SAP certifications, TOGAF, DODAF, EACOE, ZIF, etc.).
  • Conceptual and practical knowledge of new, and emerging, computing architectures and solutions: cloud computing, platform architecture, artificial intelligence, data science, IOT, service-oriented architecture, artificial intelligence, data science, etc.; ability to identify emerging technology that can add business value and its implication on Canadian Pacific.
  • Strategically focused and tactically effective leader and liaison between IS deliver and operations.
  • Ability to negotiate, influence, earn trust, facilitate, and interact with business and various IS teams.
  • Strong analytical, design, problem solving and decision-making skills, inquisitiveness and the desire to understand “why”, “what” and “how”, contextualization skills and ability to "connect the dots", desire to examine things and dive into details without losing a big picture.
  • Innovator and results driven change enabler with emerging focus on delivering technology enabled business value (reducing operating ratio) and exceeding business expectations.
  • Fundamental transportation and/or supply chain management business knowledge (concepts, processes, principles, frameworks, metrics, applications, and data).
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

Management Conductor Program:
