Are you a Process Engineer with experience in oil sands upgrading and refining who is looking to support plant operations and drive continuous real-time improvements? In this dynamic position, you will support the secondary extraction plant operations at Fort Hills, and optimize operational plans to maximize the value of Fort Hills’ production in the short and long term.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Monitor the Fort Hills Secondary Extraction performance against design and operating limits to meet that operating objectives. This includes day-to-day and short / medium terms process unit monitoring and reporting
  • Solve deviations and process control problems to ensure reliable, safe, and productive operation
  • Identify root causes, recommend and implement technical solutions and audit follow-up
  • Strive to pin point production opportunities and reduce emissions
  • Support risk review for process related changes at site and actively participate in risk review hazard and operational studies
  • Support and execute modifications and improvement initiatives using the Suncor Management of Change (MOC) processes
  • Complete and provide support to the assigned scoping studies for the modifications proposed to improve the long term performance and to mitigate the potential operating issues in assigned area
  • Provide technical support to the turnaround / outages preparation and execution
  • Lead and participate in incident investigations and complete follow-up action items as assigned
  • Assist in evaluating unit performance and issue reports pertaining to KPI performance and regulatory requirements

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • A degree in Chemical (Process) Engineering
  • Registration as a professional engineer or eligible to become a professional engineer through APEGA
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to anticipate potential problems and check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions, as well as having a strong sense of accountability
  • Ability to manage multiple, diverse relationships and activities while maintaining focus and priorities
  • Awareness of the regulatory legal/regulatory and operating requirements of a hydrocarbon processing facility
  • A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • Two years of operational and production experience in an oil sands/SAGD/refinery and/or petrochemical facility
  • Demonstrated proof of a continuous improvement attitude and able to seek greater knowledge collaboratively in the workplace
  • Outstanding analytical skills, critical thinking with strong non-authoritative leadership skills
  • Strong technical knowledge of key process equipment calculations for evaluating equipment performance and predicting impacts of change
  • Self-starter willing to develop skills through seeking-out and collaborating with senior engineers and subject matter experts

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
  • This position is safety sensitive
  • Some travel to Fort Hills Mine Site will be required
