The opportunity

This position will report to the Manager, Land Law. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing primarily land (surface rights), land-regulatory and landowner-related legal advice and services on Canadian projects and matters to departments in the Gas, Liquids and Power business units. Effective collaboration with corporate/commercial and regulatory legal colleagues will be required.

 

What you'll do

  • Provide support, guidance, and legal opinions with respect to various land issues and strategies
  • Draft land acquisition, land-rights and other land-related agreements
  • Work independently on complex legal matters and projects
  • Support land-related aspects of regulatory filings with federal and provincial regulatory boards and other administrative tribunals and agencies
  • Negotiate various matters on TC Energy's behalf
  • Work in conjunction with and provide informal leadership and direction to junior lawyers and external legal counsel
  • Provide mentorship to more junior members of the group in complex legal matters and strategies
  • Provide support to the broader Stakeholder and Supply Chain Management Law group as required; and
  • Other tasks as required.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Law degree from a Canadian law school or an ABA accredited law school required
  • Membership or eligible for membership to the Alberta Bar
  • Minimun of 10 years of total legal experience including a minimum of 5 years of direct land or regulatory law experience and direct experience working as a project lawyer; although candidates with a different combination of education and experience may be considered
  • Strong knowledge of and familiarity with applicable federal and provincial laws, regulations and practices
  • A general understanding of the pipeline businesses and regulatory framework in which we work; and
  • Non-legal energy industry experience would be an asset.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong communication and advocacy skills, both oral and written
  • Strong commercial/business acumen
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to support diverse client groups and handle multiple files
  • Demonstrated ability to be lead counsel on complex matters
  • Demonstrated ability to complete complex legal tasks within tight deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well both independently as well as in a team environment
  • Exhibited informal mentoring skills
  • An ability and willingness to travel within North America as required; and
  • Experience in proceedings before federal and provincial energy regulatory boards and tribunals, including surface rights compensation, an asset.
