The opportunity

Reporting to the Eastern Engineering Manager, you'll perform a variety of engineering tasks in collaboration with regional and central support staff to achieve reliable operation and continuous improvement of all plant equipment located at TC Energy's Canadian power and unregulated gas storage facilities.

The Electrical EIT will be the system engineer responsible for generators and high voltage equipment at all of TC Energy's power and unregulated gas storage facilities under the supervision of senior engineering staff. You will implement innovative engineering solutions to operations and maintenance issues, support capital project design, planning, and execution, and optimize maintenance practices to ensure lowest total life cycle costs in accordance with industry accepted engineering practices, governing regulations, and TC Energy procedures. In this position, you will be an individual contributor and will work closely with other groups as well as leads from Engineering and Project Management, Operations, Commercial, Supply Chain, Compliance, Legal and other internal/external stakeholders to plan, organize and execute assigned tasks and duties.

What you'll do

  • Provide technical support to plant operation and maintenance teams and troubleshoot equipment problems
  • Initiate comprehensive capital improvement projects that include developing clear definitions of scope, investment valuations of alternatives, cost estimates, schedules, and execution plans
  • Support projects through review of engineering design documentation from equipment manufacturers and outside consulting firms including drawings, submittals, calculations, reports and other related information
  • Evaluate and recommend various contractors and technical service providers
  • Design engineered solutions to solve problems (or solicit internal or external expertise when work is outside core technical capabilities) to meet project schedules or other corporate objectives
  • Ensuring projects are delivered on time/budget and the equipment and materials are utilized according to the required standards
  • Determine and optimize preventive maintenance plans for generators and high voltage equipment
  • Analyze and assess equipment condition through review of field test data and other equipment-centered information systems
  • Perform and direct investigative assessments, develop testing plans, perform equipment root cause failure analysis, and support equipment restoration activities
  • Make independent interpretations and conclusions and communicate recommendations to management and other effected parties in a way that fosters consensus and facilitates efficient outcomes
  • Facilitate the development and/or review of internal Engineering Design Standards, Equipment Integrity Plans, Technical Specifications, as assigned
  • Ensure relevant documentation is retained in accordance with company expectations including: drawings, reference manuals, and other related information

Minimum qualifications

  • Must have completed of Bachelor's Degree Program in Electrical Engineering, Applied Science or equivalent degree (as recognized by a Canadian Provincial Association of Professional Engineers, such as PEO)
  • Current registration with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) as an Engineer-in-Training
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant field experience in power generation facilities (i.e. installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance); not including co-op or internship work terms
  • Working knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code, NEC, IEEE standards is required
  • All positions require background screening; some include criminal and/or credit checks in order to comply with regulations
  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license and provide a driver's abstract for review
  • Solid understanding of Microsoft Office applications is required
  • You must be legally entitled to work in Canada by way of Canadian Citizenship, Permanent Residency or a valid work permit


Preferred qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to provide and present timely and relevant feedback/reporting to various stakeholders; candidates may be asked to submit a technical writing sample
  • Innovative, self-motivated, professional, and able to work without direct supervision and contribute in a fast-paced, multi-discipline team environment
  • Ability to work independently to organize, plan, coordinate, and manage multiple projects simultaneously including providing daily field support
  • Demonstrated familiarity with project management principles and practices
  • Experience in design, operation and maintenance of high voltage substations, generators, transformers, protection relays and other balance of plant equipment
  • Experience in arc flash models and protection & coordination studies is considered an asset
  • Experience in process and practice of conducting engineering studies, including power flow, short circuit, protective device coordination, motor starting, and arc flash analysis
  • Experience with high voltage substations, transformers, switchgear, motors, generators, and other high-voltage electrical
  • Experience with operation and/or maintenance, design, installation, and/or commissioning of gas turbines, steam turbines, wind turbines, and solar farms and related electrical and auxiliary equipment
  • Previous hands on experience at a combined cycle power plant is considered an asset
  • SAP experience is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated analytical skills and problem-solving capability
  • Strong presentation, interpersonal, and written communication skills
  • Team player with the ability to collaborate and interact with other groups
  • Flexible and adaptable to change


This position is not a part of the EIT Rotation Program. This role will be on a standard work schedule, with opportunities to travel to the field for site visits or term assignments to assist with operations or project issues. Consistent with our employment practices, this position is eligible for the EIT Relocation Package.

This position will require travel up to 50% across North America. As such, you must have unrestricted ability to travel within North America for durations of 30+ days at a time, and you must be able to provide and maintain applicable documentation to this affect.
