In this dynamic new role, you will provide legal advice and support with respect to regulatory matters associated with our Canadian operations.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Provide legal advice covering a broad scope of regulatory issues, including matters before provincial and federal energy and environmental regulatory agencies, and occupational health and safety matters
  • Support the regulatory group and business unit technical experts in drafting and developing regulatory applications, preparing for and conducting regulatory hearings, interpreting approvals, and working with applicable regulatory agencies
  • Provide legal support and guidance concerning regulatory compliance with applicable legislation and regulatory approvals
  • Offer legal expertise to emergency response situations and incident investigations, including with respect to environmental and occupational health and safety incidents
  • Actively identify and manage areas of legal and regulatory risk

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five-year Bar call
  • LLB or equivalent and membership in the Law Society of Alberta
  • Familiarity with key federal and provincial regulatory legislation, including the Responsible Energy Development Act, Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Wildlife Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Oil Sands Conservation Act, Oil and Gas Conservation Act, Water Act, Public Lands Act, Mines and Minerals Act, Pipeline Act, Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, Canadian Environmental Protection Act, Fisheries Act, Canada Wildlife Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, Surface Rights Act, Alberta Utilities Commission Act, Hydro and Electric Energy Act, and Electric Utilities Act
  • The ability to synthesize a wide range of principles, issues, needs and outcomes, balancing legal, commercial and other issues
  • A strong academic background and solid career development to date
  • A high degree of flexibility and the ability to readily adapt to changes in Suncor's business priorities and plans
  • An innovative and creative way of problem solving with a demonstrated ability to work in a team environment towards achieving a desired business outcome within corporate and legal parameters
  • Alignment with our values of: safety above all else, respect, raise the bar, commitments matter and do the right thing

Preference for:

  • Heavy focus and specialization on regulatory law with experience with large scale oil and gas projects

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
  • Periodic travel to Fort McMurray
