Student positions (co-ops and interns) at Suncor are more than just a work term. You will have the opportunity to work closely with Professional Engineers and Engineers-in-Training who will provide you with mentorship and guidance. You will also gain the skills necessary to properly define problems, develop solutions, analyze alternatives and assess your impact on our operations. We have many different positions available within our mining group - see below for a quick snapshot of what you'll be doing, depending on the role.

You will use your expertise to:

Short Range Planning:

  • Export survey limits and produce ore inventory spreadsheets
  • Build and/or print weekly plan maps and design reserve polygons which are required for dispatch
  • Collaborate small scale projects such as road design or small civil designs

Short Range Tailings Planning:

  • Support coarse tailings and fine tailings engineering groups
  • Craft weekly coarse tailings plans for operations and maintenance
  • Assist with government reporting in respect to Directive 85
  • Collaborate on small scale design projects

Mine Operations Support:

  • Collaborate as a member of the leadership team that lead the mine’s day-to-day operations
  • Assist with contractor production tracking, management and execution
  • Provide technical support to all members of the mine operations team
  • Undertake a range of business optimization cases and cost saving initiatives

Long Range and Tailings Planning:

  • Maintain and use models that simulate both mining and tailings activities
  • Balance haul distances and overburden fleets
  • Provide support to the capital and development projects and assist with annual reporting

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Current enrolment in a formal co-op or internship program in 2nd, 3rd or 4th year Mine Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or Geology at an accredited post-secondary institution, and returning to full-time studies after the work term

  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • Extraordinary computer skills with intermediate to advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel
  • Deep understanding of oil and gas production and processing
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, administration and organizational skills
  • A continuous improvement mindset and are able to seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, process and hazards in the workplace
  • A zero-tolerance for shortcuts, and if the procedure is incorrect, you fix it

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will be based in Calgary, Edmonton, Fort McMurray or Fort Hills
  • This is an 8 – 12 month work term, starting in May 2019
  • Some of these positions have been identified as safety sensitive
  • Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible candidates
