Job Overview

Working at our Fort Hills mining site and reporting to the manager of our reclamation planning and field services group, you will be responsible for providing consistent, reliable and efficient geotechnical guidance to operations, planning and engineering groups.

Key Accountabilities

  • Complete geotechnical inspections of assigned work areas, raise issues and report anomalies
  • Perform geotechnical monitoring and testing for earth dam construction, foundation approvals, compaction testing/lift approvals, materials sampling at placement areas and pit inspections to assess borrow source material
  • Conduct the monthly scheduled instrumentation readings including slope indicators, piezometers and standpipes
  • Complete routine maintenance of instrumentation in your assigned area of responsibility
  • Craft, maintain and follow up with both the documented reporting and informal communication loops required for the completion of field activities (non-conformance reporting, monthly area surveillance reports and cross shift reporting)

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Engineer-in-Training with one year of experience in geotechnical construction monitoring, instrumentation monitoring, including drilling, installation and reading of slope inclinometers, piezometers, and other dyke monitoring activities
  • Experience with the operation and maintenance of portable moisture and density testing gauges
  • Preference for experience with SAP/GTILT
  • Engineering Technologist (C.E.T) or a degree in Civil Engineering/Geotechnical Engineering or a related field
  • Eligible for ASET membership is preferred
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Strong technical knowledge and skills in geotechnical field engineering/technology
  • Familiar with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and Canadian Standards Association (CSA) sampling, testing methods and procedures
  • You have exceptional organization and communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment
  • You have a strong sense of ownership, with proven social and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple and changing priorities under tight deadlines with strong decision-making skills
  • Possess solid leadership and communication skills to interact with all functions and levels of leadership
  • Understand complex processes, and strive to develop and implement continuous improvement and creative process enhancements

Working Conditions

  • This is a camp-based position at the Fort Hills site
  • The shift schedule is 7 days on, 7 days off and will include a night shift
