McMaster University & St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton

The Peter Boris Centre for Addictions Research (PBCAR) at McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is inviting applicants for postdoctoral fellowships in addiction research.

The fellowships are to gain advanced research training to understand the etiology and treatment of addiction.  Fellows will work closely with a primary mentor and co-mentors from the Centre’s affiliated faculty to gain new skills, contribute to existing projects, and develop their personal research programs.

Areas of focus are:

  1. Using brain imaging to understand addictive behaviour;
  2. Understanding addiction via behavioural economics and neuroeconomics;
  3. Genetic correlates of addiction and related endophenotypes;
  4. Developmental course of alcohol and other substance misuse in emerging adults;
  5. Effects of cannabis legalization in Canada;
  6. Trajectories of recovery and relapse in addiction treatment.

Conditions of interest include alcohol use disorder, cannabis use disorder, gambling disorder, and food addiction/obesity. In addition, PBCAR faculty have interests in the overlap between addiction and several other conditions, particularly post-traumatic stress disorder, major depressive disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Eligible applicants will have completed a PhD or MD (or equivalent) degree, with training in psychology, psychiatry, behaviour analysis, cognitive neuroscience, behavioural genetics, or related fields.  Successful candidates will be intellectually curious, highly motivated individuals who can work well both in teams and independently.

For candidates with a background in clinical psychology, supervised clinical training may also be available (subject to existing clinical opportunities).

Benefits will include a competitive fellowship stipend and benefits ($45,000-$60,000 CAD) that are commensurate with experience, with the potential for travel support and pilot funding.  The fellowship will be for up to two years.

To apply, applicants should submit a current CV and letter of interest to Ms. Jane de Jesus (dejesuj@mcmaster.ca). Within the letter, applicants should describe their interests and potential mentors.  Interested applicants may also apply directly via https://hr.mcmaster.ca/ (Job ID 28828).
