Faculty of Social Science, Department of Health, Aging and Society

Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Social Gerontology

The Department of Health, Aging and Society in the Faculty of Social Sciences at McMaster University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor in the discipline of Social Gerontology.  Applicants must possess a PhD in a related discipline at the time of application, and a developing program of research.

We are interested in applicants whose expertise would add to existing areas of departmental teaching and research strength, but particularly in scholars who take a ‘critical perspective’ to ‘the twenty-first century aging experience’. The former might involve an academic commitment to questioning norms and power structures, highlighting disadvantage and oppression, participating in community-engaged research and an appreciation of theory. The latter might involve attention to new materialities, new technologies, developments in social policy, and evolving forms of social, family and institutional relationships.

The Department of Health, Aging & Society is an interdisciplinary unit, and our faculty members are engaged in collaborative research across a number of disciplines, faculties, departments, and other units at McMaster. Within the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Department is closely linked to the Gilbrea Centre for Studies on Aging, and at McMaster more generally, our faculty members are important participants in the McMaster Institute for Aging Research (MIRA).

Applicants must demonstrate evidence of excellence in research and teaching, and have a commitment to service. We invite candidates to highlight how they could add to the department’s innovations, such as in experiential education and community engagement, with the aim of enhancing the student experience and research opportunities.

Particular requirements include a strong record of peer-reviewed publications for the candidate’s career-stage, and the ability to maintain an independent research program. The successful candidate will have a track record or strong potential in teaching and supervision at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as in academic service.

The Department of Health, Aging and Society currently has 13 full-time faculty members and a number of cross-appointed members. We offer BA and Honours BA programs in Aging and Society and in Health and Society, an MA in Health and Aging, and two PhD programs - Health and Society, and Social Gerontology.
