Academic Palliative Medicine Physician

St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University invites applications for an Academic Palliative Medicine physician with expertise in clinical palliative medicine for a full time faculty position effective January 1, 2020.

As a multi-site, tertiary care, academic and research health care organization, St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) strives to care for patients and families in a spirit of compassion and commits to making a difference in people's lives through innovative health services and internationally recognized programs. As well as having strong general internal medicine, general surgery, and family medicine programs, SJHH specialty and regional services include respiratory  and gastrointestinal medicine; nephrology; mental health; ophthalmology, and thoracic, head and neck and urological surgery.

The Palliative Care Service has been part of St. Joseph’s Healthcare since the 1970s. The service works in shared-care model across all hospital sites to provide care for patients and families with complex needs and to support colleagues.  It is committed to excellence in clinical care, education, research, and system innovation. The palliative medicine physician will be one of three physicians who work collaboratively to provide clinical expertise in palliative medicine.

The successful candidate will be a full time member of the Division of GIM and is expected to contribute to the academic mission of the Faculty and Division.  This position is predominantly a clinician educator position and we are looking for an individual who has demonstrated experience in teaching or clinical research.

Academic responsibilities include clinical supervision in palliative medicine of medical residents, clerks, and students; teaching medical students and residents on the clinical teaching units; and teaching in the undergraduate and graduate medical programs.  Participation in committees with administrative, clinical, educational, research or other mandates is required. It is expected that the position will be approximately 70% clinical, 20% teaching, 10% quality improvement/research.

Applicants should be certified (or eligible for certification) by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and must be licensed (or eligible for licensure) in the Province of Ontario.  Additionally, applicants will have completed accredited training in palliative medicine.  Experience in palliative medicine as a member of an interdisciplinary team working in more than one setting is required.    This position requires an individual who can bring energy, enthusiasm and has the ability to work collaboratively.
